“I remember the moment I decided to make a change. I was lying on the floor of my living room, feeling terrible about myself because my kids were crawling all over me, trying to wrestle, and I was too tired to engage. I had never thought that I was fat, but clearly there was something out of balance with my health.”
The Excuse Train
Knowing I needed to make a change was only the beginning. I wasn’t in college with no responsibilities and all of the time in the world – I had a wife and a job and children…when was I supposed to find time to workout?
The Quick Fix
I joined a gym and started waking up early. I was glad that I was doing SOMETHING to take control of my health, but something still felt missing….a kind of empty feeling.
I have a brother-in-law who lives in Charlotte, NC. He had mentioned this group called F3 that he had been working out with. I never thought much of it because it was just an East Coast thing.
We visited Charlotte over Spring Break about 5 months after I had started going to the gym and sure enough, my brother-in-law invited me to join him at an F3 workout.
My First Post
We woke up at 4:30am so we could pick up another guy and grab some Kettlebells for a special kind of workout. We arrived to a full school parking lot at 5:15am. These 26 men were all greeting each other like reunited friends at a high school reunion. At 5:30am we started the “beat down” and it was one of the hardest workouts I’ve done. There were a few guys, none of which I had met before, that worked out at my pace and made me feel welcome.
I left that workout way more tired than I ever was when I went to the gym by myself, but with a huge smile on my face. Two things were very clear – I needed other men to push me to a level that I was not pushing myself to & the empty feeling I had going to the gym was a lack of camaraderie that F3 brought.
Close to Home
The men in Charlotte mentioned that Indianapolis was on the list of cities for expansion, but none of them knew that during that workout there were 12 men in Indianapolis working out for the very first time. Needless to say, I jumped right in when I returned from vacation.
You have a chance to take back control – of your fitness, your energy, your friendships, your life.
The focus of F3 is to create High Impact Men (H.I.M.) that leave no man behind, but leave no man where they found him.
For me, I’m now the dad that is outside playing kickball or basketball with my kids. It turns out I did have a little extra weight on me (I’ve lost 4″ off of my waist). I now run Spartan races and have competed in a Sprint Triathlon, all with F3 brothers. I’m in the best shape of my life and I feel like for the first time in years, I have a great group of friends.
Yes, it is early. Yes, it will hurt. Yes, it will change your life.
